2 Children Seriously Injured in Swansea Police Cruiser Accident

February 18, 2010 – Swansea, Mass. – Two young children suffered serious personal injuries after a two-car collision involving a police cruiser. The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon in Swansea and left a 2-year-old child in critical condition and a 1-year-old in stable condition.

reports that Officer Alan LaChance, 25, was driving on Route 6 when he struck a car that was exiting Early Mind Daycare. The crashed car was driven by Jared Sheldon, 21, with passengers Shelbi Provencher, 19, and the two young children.

The toddler was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in critical condition, while the infant has been stabilized at the same location. 

Sheldon and Provencher suffered serious personal injuries and are in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital. Officer LaChance was treated for minor injuries and released from Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Authorities have said that the Officer involved in the Swansea crash had reportedly been about to stop a car with suspended registration just prior to the collision. The accident remains under investigation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
