Four certified nursing assistants (CNAs) have been fired from their jobs and two administrators have been replaced at Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield, following numerous abuse allegations that have surfaced within the past few months.
The Eagle Tribune reported that The Department of Public Health has released their report on the nursing home abuse complaints and reveals that over 12 residents were subject to humiliating taunting and verbal abuse at the hands of these employees.
The CNAs reportedly taunted patients about their mental or physical conditions or challenges, often using sexually explicit language. One of the employees reportedly took a cell phone video of a patient who was suffering from dementia, asking the patient questions and later sharing it with fellow co-workers and laughing at the patient.
It was reported that the nursing assistants would tell patients to wait for assistance until they were finished sending text messages and would openly discuss sexual activity and drug use in front of patients. Another CNA reportedly pushed a cookie into a patient’s mouth and called her a “pig.” One of the CNAs made a female patient suffering from memory loss cry after repeatedly asking her to remember domestic abuse from her past.
The nursing assistants may face criminal charges following the thorough investigation of the allegations. Over 7 other employees at the center knew about the incidents of abuse but did not report them to top administrators and officials are currently weighing charges against these employees.
Masconomet Healthcare Center has previously been reported to be among the Commonwealth’s highest rated nursing homes.
