Prevent Boating Accidents: Make Sure Passengers Are Seated

The laws governing passengers on watercrafts are excellent tools for preventing boating accidents, and lawsuits as well. While regulations vary according to local area, nearly every state has seating restrictions for boats. Passengers are prohibited from occupying the bow or gunwales without a safety guardrail in place (many boats don't have them.)

To further reduce potential risks and liability, boat operators can ask passengers to use available seating. If the boat is small, distributing weight evenly and explaining how to maintain a low center of gravity are important. These steps can prevent capsizing, swamping, overboard spills, and slips-and-falls.

The Float Plan

Boating accidents happen all the time, causing serious and sometimes fatal injuries. Boats can go missing and no one is the wiser. Searches fail because no one knows where to look.

An under-used tool, the Float Plan, can be a great boating safety device.

The American Boating Association defines a Float Plan as a safety document, "It contains the who, what, where, when and how of your outing or trip. Simply fill out the form before heading out on the water, print it, and leave it with a person who can be depended upon to notify the local police, sheriff, Coast Guard station or other rescue organization, should you not return as scheduled."

US Coast Guard Initiative – Boat Safely

The United States Coast Guard
has a boating safety initiative. Since many boating accidents are preventable, the Coast Guard reminds everyone to "Boat Responsibly!"

Some of the key components of the campaign remind boaters to:
  • Get a free vessel safety check from the Coast Guard Auxiliary
  • Wear a life vest or jacket
  • Don't drink and boat
  • Take a boating safety course

The slogan for their initiative, "Boat Responsibly" can be found on all of their printed materials as well as all over their website.

The initiative reminds boaters that ultimately they are responsible for the safety of themselves and their passengers. Additionally, boaters need to take responsibility for their actions while on the waterways.

Boating Under the Influence is a Deadly

Boating conjures up all kinds of visions: relaxation, swimming, diving, and for many people drinking. Unfortunately, drinking alcohol while boating is both illegal and dangerous. Both the driver of the boat and the passengers should refrain from drinking while boating to ensure the safety of all.

Statistics show that boating under the influence (BUI) is one of the leading causes of boating accidents and can make it 10 times more likely for boaters to be killed in such an accident.

In 2007, there were 391 boating accidents involving alcohol and there were 145 alcohol-related boating deaths.

Careless Boating Causes Accidents

The first two contributing factors to boating accidents are operator inattention and careless/reckless operation. These two causes were involved in 1,180 accidents in 2007. Additionally, the inattention and reckless operation resulted in 80 deaths in 2007.

These kinds of accidents were happening at a rate of 23 accidents per week last year, and that is if you say boating occurs year-round.

These boating accidents and deaths are preventable!

The careless and reckless operation of a boat was a primary aspect in 33 of those deaths. Operators need to follow boating laws and drive safely to ensure these fatalities do not continue to happen.

Preventing childrens boating accidents

More than 70 million people will be enjoying their boats this summer. To make it a safe and fun time, parents should really make sure their children wear a life jacket—the most important safety measure they can take. Nine out of ten people who drown each year were not wearing life jackets, according to the North American Safe Boating Campaign, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In addition to drowning, boating accidents can result in trauma, hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, and other life-threatening conditions.

In addition to requiring all people on the boat to wear a life jacket, and not having alcohol on board, parents can also take part in a boating education course. Many boating accidents happen because the boat driver does not understand how to operate the boat or operates the boat recklessly or too fast.

An educational boating course can provide operating instructions and boating safety techniques similar to a car education class. The U.S. Coast Guard provides a free service called the Vessel Safety Check where volunteers check the boat's equipment and provide training about boat safety procedures.

How to protect your child from boating injuries

Summer is here and families are enjoying taking their boats on the water once again.  Boating can be a wonderful experience for families to enjoy together, as long as parents follow certain safety tips to make sure that everyone has a good time in a safe way. One of the most important safety practices parents can institute when taking their families boating is requiring everyone on the boat to wear a life jacket.  According to the North American Safe Boating Campaign, nine out of 10 people who drown each year were not wearing life jackets.

According to the most recent World Health Organization and UNICEF report, World Health Organization and UNICEF World Report on Child Injury Prevention, 2008, drowning ranks 13th as the overall cause of death for children under age 14.  And children from the ages of 1-4 are at the highest risk of drowning.

Another factor contributing to boat accidents is accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.  Because the boat engine emits carbon monoxide, if there is an equipment problem with the engine, the odorless gas can cause people to pass out or to die. Parents can avoid this problem by making sure the boat always has adequate ventilation, the equipment is working properly, and installing carbon monoxide detectors on the boat.

New Hampshire boating accident claims life

One man died and another was injured after the boat they were fishing from capsized off of Hampton Beach in New Hampshire.

Barry Arnold, a 25-year-old from Plaistow, died and his friend, Christian Frey is recovering from hypothermia after a wave struck their 14-foot boat as they were fishing on Sunday evening around 7p.m. Witnesses on the beach said the men were not wearing life jackets when the wave hit.

The men were reportedly in the water for approximately 45 minutes before fellow boaters, directed by people on the beach, came to Frey's aid. Arnold was later located by a bystander, who dragged him to shore.

Both men were taken to Exeter Hospital.
