Sailboat Explosion on Dorchester Bay Injures Two

According to The Boston Globe, an unidentified 58-year-old man and his teenage son were injured last Saturday evening when the sailboat they were working on caught on fire in an explosion in Dorchester Bay just after 5:00pm.

The unnamed man sustained burns to his hands and arms and was taken to a Boston hospital. The man’s son was also transported to the hospital for an evaluation, though reports indicate that he did not appear to be seriously injured in the boat accident.

The Globe reports that the father and son had been working on the motor of the sailboat when the explosion occurred.

A nearby motor boat made its way to rescue the father and son from the burning boat and brought them back to shore for medical treatment.

Authorities report that the fire was put out an hour after the initial report of the explosion on the 15-foot boat was called in. Officials are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the boating incident.

2 Treated for Hypothermia After Canoes Capsize

Two young men were treated for hypothermia Monday afternoon after their canoes capsized in Canobie Lake about 100 yards off shore along Woodvue Road.

How Did the Accident Occur?

According to the authorities, one of the young man overturned his canoe first, and when his friend paddled out to help, he also capsized.

Assistant fire Chief Edward Morgan told the Eagle Tribune that when they arrived at the lake, the two men were swimming toward the shoreline, and that their vessels were in the water. “They both made it to shore on their own and we didn’t have to rescue them,” Morgan said.

The men, who were not identified, were hurt and later treated for hypothermia from the exposure to the freezing water.

It was not immediately clear why the canoes overturned. Possible reasons include strong currents, wind blowing across the lake, human error and other factors.

Drowning Accidents

As with any water-related activity, there is always the danger of accidentally suffering a drowning injury or death. The two men were lucky that they escaped only with hypothermia from their accident.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), males are roughly 3.7 times more likely to die in an unintentional drowning accident than females. In 2007, there were 3,443 deaths from unintentional drownings in the United States. An additional 496 people died in boating-related incidents.

10-year-old Boy Dies in Norwich Lake Boating Accident

A tragic boating accident on Norwich Lake in Huntington, Massachusetts last week resulted in the death of a 10-year-old boy.

Gus Adamopoulos of Ludlow and his father, James, were in their kayak last Tuesday in the early evening when they were hit by a boat pulling a water skier.

Gus was pronounced dead at an area hospital after being transported from the lake. His father sustained injuries to his leg but no further information on his medical condition was given.

The operator of the boat was a man from Westfield and neither his name nor the water-skier’s name was released.

With the school year right around the corner, Gus was preparing to enter 5th grade. School officials are organizing counseling services for students at the school once classes begin.

State and local police are continuing to investigate the incident and will determine whether or not charges are to be filed against the operator of the boat.
