Boating and the Clean Water Act

When the winter blues turn into sunny spring filled days, a boater’s thoughts will turn to spending time out on the water. Before they set sail however, the boat will need to be cleaned in preparation for its maiden voyage of the year.

The American Boating Organization reminds boaters to follow these Clean Water Act rules when preparing their boat for the water and to follow these tips:

  • Avoid using hazardous cleaning materials
  • If hazardous materials are used, dispose of them in proper containers marked as such
  • Rinse your boat with fresh water
  • Only use the amount of cleaning material you need and clean up spills promptly
  • Dispose of oil and batteries properly
  • Use non-toxic hull paint

By following these tips, boaters can assure themselves of being in compliance with the Clean Water Act as well as other environmental regulations.
