Peabody Father Accused of Assaulting 7-Week-Old Daughter

Richard Elias, 22, of Peabody faces assault and battery charges after he reportedly shook and head-butted his 7-week-old daughter this past Saturday evening at the family’s apartment because she had been crying.

What Happened

The Salem News reports that Elias was playing video games and drinking beer that evening when his daughter’s crying began to bother him.  Elias then shook the infant and hit his head against hers, which caused her head to feel like a “pillow or a sponge.”  Afterward, the baby had seizures for roughly 4 hours before Elias took her to an area hospital.  She was then rushed to a Boston hospital for further medical treatment.

Authorities have confirmed that the little girl sustained a traumatic brain injury and experienced bleeding in her brain.  The infant’s mother, Rachel, 37, had been out at a party Saturday evening and was not home at the time of the incident.

Officials have also learned that Elias shook his daughter on October 19 because she had soiled a diaper he had just put on her.  Elias further stated to police that at one point he was trying to bounce his daughter on his knee but did not support her neck.  Authorities have also reported that Elias forcefully “threw” his daughter onto his shoulder, with her head hitting his collarbone.  The baby girl began suffering seizures following the incidents on October 19.

Elias continues to be held on bail at the Middleton Jail and is due back in court next Monday for a dangerousness hearing.  He has entered pleas of not guilty in answer to the assault and battery charges.

Child Abuse Statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 772,000 children were determined to be victims of abuse and neglect across the U.S. in 2008.  The CDC further reports that infants and young children under age 4 are at the highest risk of suffering injury and death from abuse.

Toddler Found Forgotten, Found Dead in Van in Dorchester

Gabriel Josh-Cazir Pierre, 17 months old, was found dead in a day care center’s van outside of a day care facility on Floyd Street in Dorchester last week on Monday. Authorities have reported that the little boy was forgotten about and was left in the van for the majority of the day, not discovered until nearly 4:00pm. Temperatures that day reached into the 80s.

The Boston Globe reported that the driver for the day care center’s van, Luis Matos, found the boy still in the van that afternoon and immediately called police. Matos suffered chest pains after he discovered the toddler and was taken to a Boston area hospital for treatment.

The van had been parked outside of a day care center, which was not the facility that Gabriel regularly went to. Officials have reported that Gabriel was supposed to be driven to another center but was allegedly forgotten about.

The city shut down the Floyd Street day care facility after an inspection of the center revealed that there were no fire extinguishers, emergency lights, any evacuation plan, or carbon monoxide detectors.

The owner and also the wife of Matos, Gloria Luna, had 13 children at the Floyd Street center that day when the facility has a license for only 10 children. The unnamed center that Gabriel should have been transported to has also since shut down. Gabriel’s mother, Virginie Cazir, stated that the owner of Gabriel’s day care did not call her that day to report that Gabriel had been dropped off.

Authorities are awaiting the autopsy results of the toddler before considering pressing any charges against the owner or the driver. Police are continuing their investigation into this tragedy.

What Are the Consequences of Child Lead Poisoning?

Lead poisoning can place children of all ages at a serious risk of suffering from a lifelong brain injury if symptoms are not immediately recognized.

The origins of lead poisoning can be traced to numerous household products, such as certain paints, cleaning products, dishware, jewelry for kids, and toys. Additionally, lead can be found on fencing installed in and around yards and has even been identified in dust particles.

Certain types of plastic containers and water bottles have also been found to contain lead, which could then spread to the food or drink that is being held in those containers.

Young children are the most vulnerable victims of this type of poisoning and they can easily access these common items.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalls tainted products containing lead if the product puts consumers at a significant risk for injury, especially products that exceed the legal limit allowed for lead amounts.

Lead poisoning affects one’s neurological system and can result in lifelong impairments, disabilities, and even brain damage. Some of the conditions that could potentially stem from lead poisoning are these:

  • Delays in development and/or learning disability
  • Abnormal speech
  • Loss of hearing or significant damage to one’s hearing
  • Kidney or brain damage
  • Abnormal growth of bones or muscles among children

Here are some of the symptoms of lead poisoning:

  • Very pale skin
  • Unexplained stomach pain or aches
  • Unexplained loss of appetite and weight

Joseph Testa Held on $15G Bail

Joseph Testa, 28, of Revere is being held on $15,000 bail for several child abuse charges after his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son was discovered unresponsive near a Revere sidewalk last week.

According to The Daily Item, Testa was reportedly babysitting the little boy for his girlfriend last Friday when he is alleged to have severely injured the boy, who remains in the care of a Boston hospital for life-threatening injuries. The boy suffered serious bleeding in his brain and numerous bruises all over his body, including his eye, ear, knees, hip, and genitals. Drivers on Revere Beach Parkway reported finding the boy lying on the grass near the busy street and immediately called police, who were able to then track down Testa.

Prior to Testa’s arrest, he telephoned the boy’s mother to say that her son “ran into a door” following his nap as an explanation for the serious injuries. The previous night, the boy’s mother noticed a scratch on her son and bruising on the boy’s genitals. Testa convinced her that she would be seen as an “unfit mother” if she brought the boy to the doctor. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office has stated that the boy’s injuries are non-accidental in this tragic case of child abuse. Testa entered pleas of not guilty to numerous charges earlier this week at his arraignment. Testa is due back in court at the end of May for a pre-trial hearing.

Both women prevented the dogs from getting to the baby, who remained safe in a stroller during the duration of the attack.

Adams reported to The Eagle Tribune that her wounds from the dog bites are still not healing well. The friend, who was not identified, was bitten about 6 times and is currently being treated at an area hospital because the wounds have become infected. The dogs left the women briefly, but then ran back towards them, reportedly trying to bite their arms this time. Adams stated that she believes the dogs were after her baby granddaughter. She called 911 and an animal control officer was able to subdue the dogs. The woman who was watching the dogs for the owner was fined $100 in violation of Haverhill’s leash laws.
