Coast Guard too slow to respond to boat accident

An internal investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard determined that their response to a boating accident in Massachusetts was too slow.

Matteo Russo and his father-in-law, John Orlando, were killed while out to sea fishing off the trawler, Patriot, about 15 miles southeast of Gloucester. Russo's wife was alerted to trouble aboard the boat when a company monitoring a fire alarm called her in the early morning hours of January 3. Russo's wife contacted the Coast Guard, but search and rescue boats were not launched for more than two hours.

The boat sunk but the two men's bodies were located on the day of the accident.

Vice Admiral Robert J. Papp Jr., said that the investigation "showed that we were too slow to launch search and rescue assets because of poor collection and analysis of information, and decision making regarding the Patriot's status."
