Complaints Spur Another J&J Benadryl and Tylenol Recall

Johnson & Johnson is adding more products to the list of its over-the-counter recalled medications, this time recalling Benadryl Allergy Ultratablets and Extra Strength Tylenol.

The latest recall was initiated due to consumer complaints regarding the above mentioned medicines, which included complaints that the medicines have a moldy smell that causes nausea and sickness, the Examiner reports.

This is yet another product recall by J&J following the three recent recalls in the last eight months issued by their McNeill Consumer Healthcare unit, which led to FDA probes, congressional investigations and various citations.

The recalled products will join a line of products by J&J which have been reported to have a moldy smell that causes nausea. The Examiner reported that the odor emanating from the products comes from a chemical which is used to treat wooden pallets that transport and store medication packaging materials.

Last month alone, more than 40 OTC medications for children and infants were recalled, including McNeil’s children’s versions of Tylenol, Tylenol Plus, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl, which did not meet quality standards required of children’s medicines.

Other reasons included higher concentration of active ingredients than the one written on the bottle, or inactive ingredients which did not meet internal testing standards, or the presence of particles in the medicine.
