March 12, 2010 – Lawrence, Mass. – A cyclist suffered serious personal injuries in a motorcycle crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon in Lawrence, Mass.
The Eagle Tribune reports that motorcycle driver Starlin Perez, 26, was heading east on Essex Street when he struck the side of a 2000 Acura driven by 19-year-old Evelyn Sanchez. Sanchez was traveling westbound on Essex at the time, and was turning left onto Oxford Street when Perez collided with the passenger side of her car.
Perez fell off his Suzuki motorcycle and sustained serious leg injuries, but was otherwise alert at the scene of the crash. The victim was initially taken to Lawrence General Hospital, and later taken to Tufts Medical Center.
Both the car and the motorcycle suffered extensive damage and were towed from the scene.
Evelyn Sanchez told authorities that although she had seen Starlin Perez approaching on his motorcycle, she assumed she had enough time to make the left turn safely.
Authorities said the plates on Perez’s motorcycle registered as being stolen, but the bike itself is not. The police have not been able to talk to Perez about the stolen plates yet.
No charges have been filed against either driver and the accident remains under investigation. Police said that although there was a large crowd gathered at the scene of the Essex Street motorcycle crash, no witnesses came forward to offer an account of the incident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
