Nathaniel Holscher, 18, of Lowell was killed in a deadly, single car accident in Danvers on Route 128 southbound shortly after 12:00am Sunday morning. Police involved with the case report that Holscher somehow lost control of the Volvo station wagon that he was driving and was ejected from the vehicle after it rolled over in the area of Exit 22 on the highway.
Holscher was flown to a local hospital for emergency care, but was declared dead some time later. Authorities will be conducting an investigation to see if speed was involved in the accident and also if Holscher had been wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
Exit 22 and the surrounding area on Route 128 were shut down to oncoming traffic for nearly two hours while officials reconstructed the scene to determine just how the tragic crash occurred.
Deadly Car Accident Statistics in Massachusetts
In 2009, 334 individuals died as a result from deadly car crashes across the state. Of those, 250 deadly crashes involving single cars occurred in instances where the driver was operating the vehicle straight ahead.
Passenger vehicles were in half of all deadly accidents across the state in 2009, and approximately 30% of light trucks (SUVS and minivans) were in fatal crashes that same year. Rollovers took place in accidents that involved 28 light trucks and 27 passenger cars.
