Driver Charged in Fatal Sturbridge Rollover Accident

February 22, 2010 – Sturbridge, Mass. – A young Worcester woman died Friday night in a rollover accident on Interstate 84 in Sturbridge, Mass.

The Boston Globe
reports that Courtney Bird, 25, died when the pick-up truck she was riding in was struck by an SUV that was attempting to change lanes. Police said that Bird died at the scene of the rollover crash.

Two other passengers, an 8-year-old girl and a 26-year-old woman, were ejected from the truck and were transported to University of Massachusetts Medical Center for the treatment of serious personal injuries. The driver of the truck, a 59-year-old woman, was not injured.

The driver of the SUV, Jose Rodriguez, 23, was charged with speeding and may face other traffic charges for his role in the tragic I-84 crash. Rodriguez and his 4 children were transported to UMass Medical Center to be treated for their accident injuries. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
