August 18, 2009 - Upper Darby, PA
- 19-year-old Nicole Gallo was killed on Friday when a driver dropped their iPod, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Gallo and her friend who were walking on a sidewalk.

The fatal car accident occurred just outside Delaware County Memorial Hospital when Gallo and 20-year-old Christine Bochanski were hit by a Hyundai Accent driven by 20-year-old Rachel Jankins. According to reports, Jankins had dropped her iPod on the floor of her car and bent over to pick it up when she lost control of the vehicle, crossed several lanes, then jumped onto the sidewalk where Gallo and Bochanski were standing.

While they can offer safety to a vehicle, they can also cause a danger to pedestrians. A number of pedestrian deaths by collisions with vehicles equipped tow bars led to the European Union banning them on new cars made after January 2002. Later ridged tow bars were banned as an aftermarket accessory by the Union.
However, in the United States and Australia they are still an ordinary accessory. Australia has passed some laws Relating to the design of this type of equipment.
