Ronnie Hoehn, 83, of Methuen was listed in critical condition at a Boston hospital last night after a leak from a propane tank caused an explosion in the garage attached to his house yesterday morning, hurling the garage doors across the street from the Central Street home. The Eagle Tribune reports that Hoehn had been checking fuel levels in propane containers in his garage when the explosion happened just before 11:00am, set off by a fire burning in a wood stove in the garage.
Hoehn reportedly sustained burns to his face and hands, as well as respiratory burns. He was initially taken to a local hospital before being rushed to a Boston area hospital for further medical treatment. Officials have reported that, thankfully, the propane-fueled explosion did not start a fire. The garage will need to be torn down, due to one of the walls caving in and the roof becoming unstable following the explosion. Smoke and debris surrounded the blast area in the Methuen neighborhood.
