March 9, 2010 – Milford, Mass. – An elderly woman was seriously injured in a car accident Monday afternoon in Milford, Mass.
The Milford Daily News reports Elvira Puntonio, 92, was a passenger in her sister’s car when the vehicle struck the vehicle in front of them at about 1:21 p.m. Elvira Puntonio was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was thrown forward and ended up under the dashboard.
Elvira Puntonio was transported by ambulance to Milford Regional Medical Center and was then transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center by LifeFlight helicopter for the treatment of serious personal injuries, including head injuries.
The driver of the car was the victim’s sister, Ida Sannicandro, 82. The accident involved a total of 4 cars, and Ida Sannicandro was cited for following too closely. She was not injured in the accident.
Accident victim Varun Keesara, 27, who was driving the vehicle that was struck by Ida Sannicandro, was cited for driving an uninsured and unregistered car. At the time of the car accident, he was on his way to the nearby Registry of Motor Vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
