March 19, 2010 – Lawrence, Mass. – A man was found unconscious in the back of his vehicle after being involved in a two-car collision early Tuesday morning in Lawrence, Mass.
The Eagle-Tribune reports that when police officers arrived on the scene of the Sanborn Street crash, they saw a 1998 Mercury Mystique parked near a 1999 Dodge Caravan. Both driver-side doors on the Mercury sustained damage, while the van had serious damage to the rear. Authorities said the van’s owner was sleeping in the back of the vehicle.
Police removed the driver and took him to Lawrence General Hospital. Reports indicate that police were unable to get any information from the driver, who they were unable to rouse due to his extreme level of intoxication. It’s estimated that the crash occurred at about 5:30 a.m.
Officers assume that the Caravan’s driver backed up into a tree and then pulled forward too far, crashing into the Mercury Mystique. The van’s airbags were both deployed, and the driver’s seat was destroyed after the two-car collision.
This car accident is still being investigated and no other injuries were reported in the crash. Authorities have not yet named the driver involved in the accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
