Is organic food safe to eat?

Massachusetts attorney Thomas M. Kiley, concentrates on legal issues surrounding defective products.  A recent New York Times article examines the national outbreak of salmonella in peanut products and the fact that although the plants in Texas and Georgia that sent out contaminated products had federal organic certification their products made people sick.  Now people who use organic produce because they want their families to be healthier are concerned about this organic certification.

The article, says that although the rules governing organic food require health inspections and pest-management plans, organic certification technically has nothing to do with food safety.  Urvashi Rangan, a senior scientist and policy analyst with Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, said people should not assume that organic foods are safer in terms of pathogens.
