Lawrence Police Chase Ends in Injuries for Driver and Passenger

February 18, 2010 – Lawrence – A police chase early Tuesday morning ended in a single-car accident, resulting in personal injuries for the driver and his passenger.

The Eagle Tribune
reports that at about 1 a.m., Glen Mottram, 38, of Haverhill was driving a 1997 Cadillac Eldorado near Lockwood Road in Lawrence. At about the same time, police received a call about suspected vehicle break-ins in the area.

When police responding to the calls attempted to pull over Mottram, he sped away toward Interstate 93. Mottram then veered across several lanes, entering I-495 North in Andover as police tried to tail him.

Mottram led police on a chase, which ended when he crashed on the off-ramp for Marston Street in Lawrence. Mottram and his passenger, Joel Messina, 41, both suffered personal injuries and were taken to Lawrence General Hospital.

Police discovered a stolen GPS with Mottram and believe it to have been from the area with the reported break-ins.

Authorities have charged Mottram with:

  • Speeding
  • reckless operation of a motor vehicle
  • failure to stop for a police officer
  • marked lanes violations
  • operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.

The Cadillac’s plates match those on Messina’s own vehicle, but he has not been charged in connection with the Lawrence police chase.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.

We are thankful that such a serious car accident did not result in any fatalities. Our firm joins the families and friends of those involved in praying that their loved ones recover soon.

We understand that the Lawrence Police Department’s Accident Division is looking into the single-car accident. However, even while the police are investigating Tuesday’s crash, we suggest that those injured consider consulting a Massachusetts personal injury lawyer.
