March 10, 2010 – Fairhaven, Mass. – A Wareham man suffered serious injuries in a two-car collision that occurred at about 9:55 a.m. Tuesday in Fairhaven, Mass.
SouthCoastToday.com reports the Interstate 195 accident occurred when Alcidia Pereira, 25, of New Bedford, was driving her 2000 Dodge Stratus eastbound near the Route 240 ramp. Police believe she lost control of her vehicle, traveling across the highway median and into westbound traffic.
The Dodge struck a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am head-on. The Pontiac’s driver, Robert Cavanaugh, 47, became trapped in his vehicle and had to be removed by rescue crews. Robert Cavanaugh was transported to Rhode Island Hospital immediately after the accident for the treatment of serious accident injuries.
Pereira and her 2 passengers were also hurt in the 195 accident, and all 3 were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for the treatment of minor accident injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and have not released any details about traffic charges connected to the accident. Police did say that Pereira will be summoned to appear for a hearing in New Bedford District Court for unspecified reasons.
Police closed 195 while the accident was investigated and cleared.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
