Marshfield Woman Suffers Burns by Exploding Bug Repellent

The Patriot Ledger reports that an unidentified woman from Marshfield suffered burns on her face and arms after flammable bug repellent caused an explosion a few feet away from her at a party in Hanover Friday evening.

The woman was sitting close by a pot of flammable mosquito repellent around 8:45pm that night when her friend and the host of the gathering, Joan Shaughnessy, went to refill the pot with more repellent.  Just as she was refilling it, it set off an explosion and caused flames to spread to the unnamed woman’s clothes and burned her arms and face.

The woman immediately jumped into the pool to put the flames on her clothes out and was rushed to a Boston hospital, where she remains in the intensive care unit.  The unidentified woman will require skin grafts for her arm that had been badly burned by the flames.

Bug Repellent Risks

Now that summer is here and the bugs are back, make sure to read the label instructions prior to spraying insect repellent in order to ensure that you’re applying it correctly and with the recommended dosage of repellent.  Spraying pesticides or repellent against electrical appliances or open flames is not advised, as this can result in an explosion due to the reaction of the chemicals and the flames.
