Massachusetts Passes Right To Repair Law

By Tom Kiley on November 9, 2012 - Comments off

As of November, 2012, Massachusetts is the first state to pass the “Right to Repair” law for ALL motor vehicles sold in the state. The earlier version of the law excluded vehicles over 10,000 lbs.

However, lawmakers could still change the law as they are working on compromise legislation after the ballot was approved. Under the ballot legislation, auto manufacturers would be required to provide computer codes to independent auto repair shops and dealers that would help with diagnosing and solving car problems.

The “Right to Repair” law would give Massachusetts consumers more freedom in deciding who gets to repair their vehicles.

Automakers on the other hand support the negotiated compromise legislation which would give them until 2018 to comply with new regulations.

The “Right to Repair” law is the first of its kind in the United States, reports the Boston Globe.
