Woman Struck and Killed by Commuter Rail Train in Hyde Park

An unidentified woman was struck and killed by an MBTA commuter rail train in Hyde Park this past Friday evening just before 5:30pm.

The Franklin line train was travelling at about 70 mph and was carrying roughly 1,200 commuters that evening when the woman was struck.

The Boston Globe reported that the unnamed woman was walking across the train tracks when she was struck but it is unknown why she was on the tracks, which are in a restricted area that has a fence around the perimeter.

Authorities reported that they are unsure if headphones or other factors played a role in the tragedy and are continuing to investigate the deadly accident.

Passengers were informed of the MBTA accident about 10 minutes after the woman was hit and continued to wait for another hour while the scene was processed.

The train then began its route again towards Readville Station. There were delays out of the Back Bay, Ruggles, and Hyde Park stations because of the fatal accident.

Several People Injured in Escalator Accident at Back Bay MBTA Station

A Back Bay MBTA escalator malfunctioned on Saturday around 10:15am, resulting in several people suffering injuries after falling, becoming caught in the escalator stairs, and being pushed into other people in this escalator accident. The Boston Globe reports that the escalator leading up from Track 2 of the commuter rail abruptly stopped, then moved forward suddenly, before it then went into reverse for up to 10 seconds before it finally stopped.

An MBTA spokesman announced that the agency is currently looking into what exactly caused the malfunction. The escalator is currently out of service while the investigation is underway and, depending on the outcome of the investigation, the cause of the malfunction may be grounds for an MBTA premises liability claim.

Three of the injured riders were Jennifer Nottage, 32, of Attleboro and her two kids, Alyana, 6, and Elijah, 12, who were on their to the Bruins parade. Nottage’s left leg was caught between two of the stairs on the escalator and she sustained a large contusion. Alyana had scratches on her legs and Elijah’s right foot became caught in the escalator, causing cuts and bruises to his ankle. A total of five people required medical treatment at the scene.
