January 22, 2010 – Shirley - A collision between a car and a commuter train that took place on January 13th is now being investigated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority police.
According to reports from Nashoba Publishing, a 73-year-old woman was driving a 2006 Chevy Impala when it collided with a commuter train at the Patterson Road railroad crossing around 6 p.m. The woman was taken to Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer with non-life-threatening injuries.
Luckily the train operator had seen the car on the railroad and was almost at a complete stop by the time the train struck the car, which substantially minimized the damage done to the vehicle and the driver. Police reported that the railroad gates and signals were functioning properly at the time of the crash.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
