Remember the Basics of Motorcycle Safety for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

The spring and summer months are the perfect time to go motorcycle riding and just about every rider waits for the first signs of warmer weather to get the bike out of the garage and get it back onto the road. But in your excitement to start riding again, it is important to remember to practice proper safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has aptly designated May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to remind riders getting back onto the road to remember to stay safe.

Motorcycle Safety Tips

By making sure to follow the below safety reminders, you can be sure to have a fun riding season:

  1. Wear the proper clothing. The weather may be warmer, but that does not mean a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals are proper riding wear. If you’re not going to wear leather riding gear, make sure you at least wear clothing made of sturdy material, and don’t forget about proper footwear! Boots that rise above your ankles are the best bet.
  2. Wear a helmet. Motorcyclists have little to no protection from their motorcycle in the case of a crash or even kicked up road debris. A full-face helmet helps protect the head from serious injury as well as the face from projectiles.
  3. Ride defensively. Many drivers do not know how to share the road with motorcycles. Because they are not always aware of you, you need to make sure you are always aware of them. Make eye contact with drivers whenever you can to make sure they see you.

Methuen Accident Leaves Lowell Motorcyclist Critically Injured

Daniel Porter, 48, of Lowell sustained critical injuries in a multi-vehicle accident on Route 110 in Methuen yesterday afternoon.

What Happened

The Eagle Tribune reported today that a Chevy Silverado pickup truck was stopped and waiting to make a left onto Wheeler Street from Route 110 when it was rear-ended by a second pick-up truck around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. This initial collision resulted in the Chevy being forced into the path of Porter, who was on his motorcycle.

Authorities closed Route 110 for about 2 miles in order to have a medical helicopter transport Porter to a Boston hospital for treatment of his critical injuries. The Tribune reported that Porter had sustained massive trauma and witness reports indicate that one of his legs was nearly severed in the crash. There was no available update of his medical condition.

The driver of the pickup truck that rear-ended the Chevy was also transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Officials are currently investigating the accident and it has been reported that no charges have been filed at this time.

Derry Biker Charged in New England Dragway Accident

Eric Kendall, 38, of Derry, NH is now facing charges stemming from a motorcycle accident that occurred on October 16 at the New England Dragway in Epping, NH. The Eagle Tribune reported today that Kendall and some 200 other bikers were gathered at the Dragway that day to try and break a world record for the most motorcyclists doing a burnout simultaneously.  After the group attempted the burnout together, Kendall then reportedly revved his bike for another burnout and crashed into Kevin Devincentis, 36, of Derry, who was on his bike at the time.  Devincentis was then forced forward from the impact into the crowd, striking spectator Bobbi Peckham, 52, of Belmont, Maine.

Devincentis suffered injuries that were considered to be minor, while Peckham sustained severe injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment.  After Kendall struck Devincentis, Kendall left the scene.  With the help of witnesses who saw the collision, officials were able to locate Kendall and arrested him last Friday.

Kendall is facing a felony charge of conduct following the crash and additional misdemeanor charges for criminal mischief and reckless conduct.  Kendall posted $5,000 bail and is due back in court at the beginning of December.

The Eagle Tribune reports that at approximately 6:00am that morning Davis was heading north on North Policy when Joselynne Laurent, 54, also of Salem, turned her Toyota Camry left onto the street from Dyson Drive, making the turn right in front of Davis.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that over 90% of motorcycle accidents with other cars take place on main roads or other roadways and not on highways. The most common location for a motorcycle crash to occur is at an intersection. It is also estimated by the NHTSA that motorcycle helmets are nearly 70% effective in preventing serious head injuries and brain damage in the event of a collision.

Milford Biker Killed in I-290 Motorcycle Accident

Anthony Fasulo, 48, of Milford was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday morning around 5:30am on the eastbound side of I-290 near Exit 23A in Shrewsbury, after he had collided with a sign on the side of the highway. The Daily Shrewsbury reports that Fasulo lost control of his motorcycle right before he struck the sign on the median.

First responders had reportedly found Fasulo dead at the crash site. Massachusetts State Troopers are continuing the investigation into the exact cause of the fatal crash. As of now, officials have determined that alcohol and speed do not appear to have played a role in the tragic accident.

Motorcycle Accidents: Statistics and Causes

Two of the most common causes of a motorcycle accident have been linked to speeding and a general lack of experience on a motorcycle. Crashes where a stationary or a fixed object is involved are estimated to result in a fatality more often than not.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that in 2009 there were about 4,600 deadly motorcycle accidents across the U.S. About 10% of these motorcycle accidents involved another car or truck. There were 54 deadly motorcycle crashes that occurred in Massachusetts in 2009, according to the NHTSA.

Haverhill Man Dies in Motorcycle Accident

Thomas Gray, 39, of Haverhill died near his home yesterday afternoon following a tragic motorcycle crash with a tree on Kingsbury Avenue.

Gray was driving his brother-in-law’s motorcycle along a slight curve on Kingsbury Ave., when the 1999 Kawasaki 750 slammed into a tree. Haverhill police said he had borrowed the motorcycle for a quick ride around the block around 5:45 p.m.

He was wearing a helmet and was alone on the bike.

What Caused the Motorcycle Crash?

According to police, the speed limit along Kingsbury Avenue is 35 mph, but Gray was allegedly traveling at a greater speed when he lost control of the bike and crashed.

Motorcycle accidents are often caused by a combination of contributing factors, such as speeding and inexperience in handling motorcycles. When a serious motorcycle accident happens, such as a crash with a stationary object under a great rate of speed, not even helmets can save the motorcyclist’s life.

We offer our condolences to Thomas Gray’s family for their tragic loss.

Police continue to investigate this accident.

Motorcycle Accidents in Massachusetts

While the cause of this accident is yet to be determined, here are some recent data from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding motorcycle accidents.

There were 4,595 fatal motorcycle accidents in the United States in 2009, or about 10% of the total fatal accidents involving motor vehicles. In Massachusetts, 54 fatal motorcycle crashes occurred in 2009.
