Oak Bluffs Woman Killed in Fiery Wareham Route 495 Car Accident

March 10, 2010 – Wareham, Mass. – An Oak Bluffs woman was killed in a fiery single-car accident Monday night in Wareham, Mass.

reports Penelope H. Dickens, 57, was driving her 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Route 495 South at about 8:10 p.m. when her SUV suddenly swerved to the right side of the road. The SUV eventually crashed into the woods, where the Jeep immediately caught fire with the victim trapped inside. Emergency crews pronounced the accident victim dead at the scene of the crash.  

The Route 495 car accident occurred near Exit 1 and no other vehicles were involved. State police continue to investigate the cause of the accident, with the assistance of local police accident investigation crews. Authorities have released little information about Penelope Dickens, who was the sole occupant of the crashed vehicle.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
