School Bus Crashes After Driver Has Heart Attack

July 29, 2009 - Pittsfield – The driver of a school bus that was transporting students from the MCLA adult education program had a fatal heart attack while behind the wheel, crashing the bus near the Berkshire mall and injuring 5 students, according to new reports.

69-year-old James A. Witherell, from Williamstown, was driving the school bus on Route 8 while carrying 15 passengers from a summer program in North Adams, when he suffered a fatal heart attack around 12:30 a.m., causing the bus to swerve off of the road and hit a guard rail.

After the bus crash, the 5 injured passengers were taken to Berkshire Medical Center with minor injuries, then released.
