Serious Bicycle Accident Head Injury: First Aid Tips

Sometimes when serious bicycle accidents occur, head injuries are involved. Head injuries can be life threatening or very minor.

Head Trauma First Aid Tips

  • Call 911
  • Check to ensure the victim is breathing, if not initiate CPR.
  • If the victim is breathing but unconscious, treat as if they have a spinal cord injury and stabilize the head and neck.
  • If bleeding is present, press firmly on the wound, but not if you suspect that the skull has been crushed; in that case, cover the wound with sterile gauze.

In the event of injury after a bicycle accident, always assess the state of the patient.
If they are mobile and moving around, they can seek medical treatment on their own. However, even if the head injury is minor, seek immediate medical treatment.
