An unidentified 73-year-old man was killed last Monday after a 3,500 pound winch fell on top of him at the Mullins Marine Service Yard in Winthrop. The Boston Globe reported that the bolts connecting the winch to the concrete supports failed, causing the winch to disconnect from the supports and crush the man between the wall and the winch itself. The fire department responded and were able to free the man, who was then brought to a Boston hospital for medical treatment. The unnamed man died from the severe injuries several hours later. The investigation has revealed that the bolts broke off of the concrete supports and had not been properly secured. Police are continuing to investigate the tragic shipyard accident.
