Simplicity Cribs Recalled After Massachusetts Infant Death

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced last week that is was recalling all Simplicity full-size cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames.

The recall was prompted by the death of a 1-year old infant from North Attleboro, MA, who suffocated when he became entrapped between the crib mattress and the crib frame in April 2008.

The Simplicity crib recall includes fixed-side and drop-side cribs since they pose a serious injury hazard and risk of entrapment, strangulation, suffocation, and fall to infants and toddlers.

CPSC received report of 13 additional incidents involving the Simplicity cribs collapsing due to the metal mattress-support frame bending or detaching. The incidents include one child entrapment that did not result in injury, and one child who suffered minor cuts to his head after the crib mattress collapsed causing him to fall out of the crib.

Since Simplicity and its successor, SFCA Inc., are no longer in business, the number of cribs sold is yet to be determined, CPSC reports. All Simplicity cribs have been recalled in the past regarding the same drop side hazard.

Parents and caregivers are advised to stop using all Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby.
