State Troopers Injured in Separate Car Accidents

July 28, 2009 – 2 Massachusetts State Troopers were injured in separate traffic stops over the weekend in Sharon and Braintree, according to recent reports.

State Trooper John McCarthy was struck in the back by an alleged drunk driver in a pick-up as he was approaching another vehicle that was stopped in the breakdown lane on Route 1 in Sharon on Sunday. McCarthy sustained minor injuries to his back and shoulder, and was taken to Norwood Hospital for treatment. He has since been released.

The intoxicated driver of the pick-up truck, 42-year-old Adalid S. Arteaga, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, marked lanes violation, unlicensed operation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, obstructing an emergency vehicle, and leaving the scene of a car accident that resulted in personal injury.

In a separate incident, Trooper Eric Papkee was also struck from my behind by a car while in the breakdown lane of I-93 North on Saturday. Papkee had pulled over a motorist and was sitting in his police cruiser processing the violation when another car struck his vehicle. Papkee sustained injuries to his neck and back and was taken to Quincy Hospital for treatment. He has also been released.

The driver of the car that struck Papkee, 52-year-old Cristo Y. Wong, was charged with failure to take care in stopping. The original motorist who was pulled over by Papkee took the opportunity of the police car accident to flee the scene. He was later stopped by police in Braintree and faces multiple charges.
