Our eighteen-year-old client was driving on an interstate into
the early morning sun. As he drove over a rise in the road,
he struck a car that was disabled and stopped in the middle
of the road because a 150-pound wheel and tire detached from
a tractor-trailer rig traveling in the opposite direction.
The lugs holding the tire had broken off, causing the tire
and wheel to travel across the median strip, and hit and
disable the stopped vehicle.
Awarded: $ 3.5 million
Our client an 86 year-old woman sustained an injury
after being struck by a bus. The inattentive bus driver
was warned by a passenger that the woman was crossing
in front of the bus but could not stop in time to avoid impact.
Awarded: $1,000,000
Our client was operating his motorcycle on a two-lane road
when a large box truck made a U-turn into his path of travel.
The client attempted to avoid the collision by laying his
motorcycle on its side. Unfortunately his lower leg and
ankle came in contact with the truck causing seven
fractures and soft tissue injury.
Awarded: $785,000

Why are SUVs so attractive to the average car buyer?
Clever marketing, perhaps.
The automakers use several marketing techniques to entice you to purchase an SUV rather than another vehicle. Because of their evocative commercials and ads, most people assume that SUVs are safer to drive than other vehicles when in fact studies have shown the SUVs are prone to severe injuries from rollovers and ejections (though this is not mentioned in their advertising).
The commercials show SUVs being driven through forests, in the mountains, or across the desert. However, very few SUVs are ever driven in these types of terrain and even if they are, the narrow wheelbase and tendency to tip makes them dangerous.
Even the names given to different models are designed to appeal to the adventurous spirit, not a soccer mom.
Wouldn't you much rather be driving a vehicle that makes you think of exciting off-road adventures than one that makes you think of an ordinary drive?
When a driver feels safe, he or she might not drive as carefully as would someone driving a smaller vehicle. The driver feels that the size of the SUV provides protection, but it really doesn't due to numerous design flaws.
SUV drivers are less likely to wear seatbelts, again believing that the size of the vehicle will protect them.
When you decide to purchase a new vehicle, check the vehicle safety rating before you buy. Make sure the automakers don't affect your decision with their deceptive advertising.
