Teen Driver Charged in Fatal Norwell OUI Accident

March 9, 2010 – Norwell, Mass. –
One teen died and another teen is facing serious traffic charges after an OUI accident Sunday night in Norwell, Mass.

WickedLocal
reports Ryan O’Donnell, 18, was killed in a rollover crash that occurred at about 9:25 p.m. on Prospect Street. Authorities said the crash happened when William Ecclestone, 18, allegedly lost control of his Chrysler Pacifica. The crash vehicle flipped upside down after striking a large tree.

Ryan O’Donnell was treated at the scene of the Norwell accident and was then transported to Weymouth’s South Shore Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. Ecclestone suffered minor personal injuries in the crash.

Police have determined that speed was likely a factor in the fatal car accident. Reports indicate that Ecclestone was given 2 field sobriety tests that he failed. William Ecclestone was charged with vehicular homicide by negligent operation, operating under the influence of alcohol (OUI), speeding, manslaughter by motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
