The Most Serious Burn: Fourth Degree

The most serious burn is the fourth degree burn. These are described as burns that damage muscle, tendon, and ligament tissue that result in skin charring and severe damage to the hypodermis. In some instances the hypodermis tissue may be partially or completely burned away. This may result in a condition known as compartment syndrome, which can be fatal or result in the amputation of the affected limb. Skin grafting is required if the burn patient survives their injuries.

The Burn Survivor Resource Center states, "Between 8,000 and 12,000 of patients with burns die ..." These are the most serious cases, and more than likely apply to the Fourth Degree burn victim.
