Holiday weekends usually see a rise in accidents and accident-related injuries, and this Fourth of July was no exception. Even police officers got injured in vehicle accidents in the last two days, as was the case witht two Mass. state troopers who got seriously injured in two different car accidents.
The first serious accident occurred on early Sunday morning, in which a state trooper suffered a leg injury. He was working a highway detail in Peabody when a car sideswiped him in an apparent hit-and-run incident.
The second accident involved drunk driving and happened early this morning (around 12:30 am). Another state trooper suffered serious injuries after he was struck by a car in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Police said the 24-year-old state police veteran, Captain Frank Hughes was directing traffic after the Fourth of July concert and fireworks on the Esplanade when he was struck by a drunk driver.
Hughes was thrown on the car’s hood in the crash, sustaining serious injuries. He was taken to Mass. General Hospital for treatment. The Boston Globe reported that Hughes was released this morning.
The allegedly drunk driver Felix Morales, 30, of East Boston, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and other offenses. He is currently being held at State Police Brighton Barracks and will be arraigned tomorrow in Cambridge District Court, Boston Globe reports.
The crash is still under state police investigation.
