March 15, 2010 – West Springfield, Mass. – Authorities believe that a man who died in a single-car crash Friday morning in West Springfield, Mass. may have suffered a seizure just prior to the accident.
MassLive.com reports that at about 11 a.m., Matthew Green, 35, of East Longmeadow, Mass. struck a guardrail on Route 5 shortly after exiting Interstate 91. The victim’s vehicle then continued traveling south for ¼ mile before flying off the road and striking both a guardrail and a light pole.
Witnesses say that it appeared as though Matthew Green was experiencing a seizure just before the car accident, and possibly lost consciousness behind the wheel.
Police said there were no skid marks at the scene of the Route 5 crash. Emergency responders pronounced Matthew Green dead at the scene of the car accident. Green was the only person in the Ford Explorer, and no other vehicles were involved.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and an autopsy will be performed to determine if a medical condition played a role in this tragic accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2008 Massachusetts Crash Statistics, there were 363 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Massachusetts.
