A Waltham, Massachusetts, toddler was in critical condition last night after her mother accidentally ran over her in the family's garage. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon at 4:15p.m. when Rachel Lafauci backed her SUV up and ran over her 20-month-old daughter, Sophia.
The car's right, front tire ran over the child and the mother moved the vehicle, and then called for help, according to a report in the Boston Globe. The child's injuries were reportedly serious but she was conscious when emergency personnel arrived.
The toddler was transported by helicopter to Boston Medical Center.
It is unclear how the accident occurred.
According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, 100 people are killed each year and 6,000 injured in similar accidents involving people backing up vehicles. The majority of those injured are children, with toddlers being the most at risk.
