Wellbutrin in Pregnant Women May Cause Heart Birth Defects

The American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology recently published findings that link heart birth defects to Wellbutrin. About 2 in each 1,000 women who took bupropion in their first trimester of pregnancy had a possible risk of cardiac birth defects.

Bupropion is used for depression, as well as for smoking cessation (under the brand name: Zyban), said Reuters. News Inferno reports that although the risks of taking Wellbutrin are not entirely clear, there are potential effects on heart birth defects.

News Inferno also published a story on report by Danish researchers who warn that expectant mothers taking antidepressants may be inadvertently harming their developing babies. According to the researchers, the antidepressants could delay some developmental milestones.
