Failure to Test for Sickle Cell Disease in Infant – $900,000 Settlement
A young child was diagnosed with sickle cell disease when he was 3 years old to the great surprise of his parents, who were not told of the great likelihood that the boy would develop the disease. Their doctor had failed to perform the necessary blood tests for detecting the disease on time.
Liability Issues
The boy’s parents learned about their son’s sickle cell disease when he was 3 years old. Although the physician knew the high likelihood that the parents were carriers of the sickle cell trait he failed to perform the appropriate blood tests.
What is Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder characterized by red blood cells that assume an abnormal sickle shape.
SCD can lead to various complications, some of which are potentially lethal.
SCD is inherited from parental genes. If one parent has sickle cell anaemia (SS) and the other has sickle cell trait (AS), there is a 50% chance of the child having sickle cell disease (SS) and a 50% chance of a child’s having sickle cell trait (AS).
When both parents have sickle cell trait (AS), a child has a 25% chance (1 of 4) of sickle cell disease (SS).
