Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a brain injury is mild, moderate or severe?

A:

There are three different levels of brain injury – mild, moderate and severe – each has different causes and subsequent symptoms. An assessment, called the Glascow Coma Scale (GCS) is used to determine the level of injury.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

  • Sometimes a loss of consciousness occurs, but does not have to occur to be considered a TBI.
  • Brain scans may appear normal.
  • If a concussion occurs, the person’s brain functioning may be altered.

Symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Difficulty remembering things
  • Balance problems
  • Irritability
  • Problems with concentration
  • Nausea
  • Emotional problems including, anxiety, depression and mood swings

Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

  • Can include confusion, loss of consciousness and behavioral problems.
  • Person can usually make a positive recovery.

Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

  • Severe trauma includes prolonged periods of unconsciousness.
  • Can include a coma or vegetative state.

The Brain Injury Association of America provides a wealth of information on the degrees of severity and the subsequent symptoms as well as rehabilitation. The type and amount of force inflicted will all affect the determination of whether a brain injury is mild, moderate or severe.
