Frequently Asked Questions

Q:

What are the different types of brain injuries?

A:

There are two primary causes of brain injury: traumatic and acquired.

A traumatic injury occurs from an external blow to the skull, causing damage to the brain. Acquired injury occurs inside the brain from factors such as stroke or a tumor.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic brain injury can occur when a blow to the head causes damage to the brain as in a:

  • Physical attack
  • Auto accident
  • Sports injury

Symptoms of a traumatic brain injury include:

  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Paralysis
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Loss of bowel movements

The Brain Injury Association of America provides a complete list of symptoms.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

An acquired brain injury occurs at the cellular level from trauma such as:

  • Neurological illness
  • Toxic poisoning
  • Strangulation
  • Drug abuse
  • Tumors
  • Aneurisms

Whereas a traumatic brain injury affects a particular part of the brain, an acquired brain injury affects various parts of the brain.

Many of the symptoms are similar to TBI, but can also include:

  • Behavioral problems (depression, hostility, confusion)
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Muscular restrictions

Although all brain injuries should be taken seriously, there are three levels of severity: mild, moderate and severe. Each level is based on the amount of neurological damage to the affected person's brain.

Every brain injury is serious and should be treated by a physician to determine the severity and needed therapy for rehabilitation.
