What is Caput Succedaneum?

Caput Succedaneum is swelling of any portion of the scalp in a newborn. It is a common birth injury caused by pressure from the uterus or vaginal wall during a head-first (vertex) delivery.

The condition usually resolves within the first week of life without treatment and does not usually cause complications. Jaundice may be an issue if there is bruising and the bruise beaks down into bilirubin.

Common Causes

• Prolonged or difficult delivery
• Vacuum extraction during birth
• Premature rupture of membranes
• Too little amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios)

Common Symptoms

• Soft/puffy swelling of the scalp
• Bruising
• Molding of the head
• Feels like soft, spongy mass
