What is a Corneal Abrasion?
A corneal abrasion is an injury to the eye caused by a scrape, scratch, or other traumatic event to the clear part of the eye which covers the iris (the colored portion of the eyeball).
Common causes of corneal abrasions include:
- Foreign debris in the eye
- Excessive rubbing of eyes when they are irritated
- Wearing contact lenses for extended periods of time
- Unprotected exposure to UV light
- Deployment of airbags
Symptoms of corneal abrasions are as follows:
- Feeling that debris is in the eye
- Tearing of the eyes
- Blurry, partial or complete loss of vision
- Sensitivity to light resulting in pain
- Muscle spasms around eye
Eye injuries can be serious and result in loss of vision. If you have eye pain and can not be seen by an ophthalmologist, you should consider seeking medical treatment at a hospital emergency room.
