What is Facial Paralysis?

Facial paralysis is the loss of voluntary muscle movement of one side of the face. There are a number of causes of facial paralysis, including birth trauma.

Common Causes

There are a number of causes of facial paralysis due to the pathway of nerves in the face. Common causes are listed below.

Almost 75% of facial paralysis cases are due to Bell's Palsy. Facial paralysis can also occur as a result of birth trauma due to pressure on the facial nerves or by use of forceps during birth.

Common Symptoms

  • Drooping of the eyelid (ptsosi)
  • Facial drooping
  • Weakness of numbness in the face

An examination by a medical professional should be done to properly diagnose facial paralysis and the extent of damage. For example, by assessing an individual's ability to raise and lower their eyebrows, doctors can determine if a lesion is in the upper or lower motor neuron component.

If you or a loved one suffers from facial paralysis and it may have been caused by surgery, or during birth, contact an attorney who is experienced in handling birth injury cases. We will evaluate your case for FREE. Call 1-800-410-2769 today!
