A Concussion from a Massachusetts Car Accident Can Be Serious
If you or someone you love has been involved in a car accident in Massachusetts, you need to be aware of the symptoms of a concussion. While most concussions are not problematic and will heal themselves, some will lead to serious complications and require surgery.
Concussion Warning Signs
It is imperative that you understand concussion symptoms so that you can pursue medical treatment if needed. Most symptoms of a concussion surface rapidly and the symptoms can vary greatly. Some of the warning signs of a concussion include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Vomiting or nausea
- Trouble balancing
- Visual disturbances or blurred vision
- Convulsions
- Confusion
- Loss of consciousness
- Lethargy
- Amnesia
The presence of any of these symptoms should prompt a visit to your doctor or local emergency room. The medical provider will conduct tests and will evaluate your symptoms to determine if in fact you have a concussion. They will also want to rule out intracranial hemorrhage and will monitor you to see if your condition worsens.
Concussion Treatment
Most concussion symptoms will go away without medical treatment, but in rare cases, surgery is required. Usually, a doctor will prescribe rest and a gradual return to normal activities. Medications may also be prescribed to treat symptoms. Doctors often want to see patients again within 24 to 72 hours of sustaining the concussion to see if symptoms worsen.
Concussion symptoms will subside within weeks, but sometimes problems do persist. Occasionally longer periods of amnesia or loss of consciousness result from a concussion. There is also a condition known as post-concussion syndrome which occurs when symptoms do not resolve for weeks, months or years following the concussion.
