SUV Rollover Accidents and SUV Safety Issues (Part A)
Despite the popularity of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and the perceived safety that comes from driving and riding in a large car, SUV rollover accidents remain a significant danger for SUV occupants.
Public Citizen, a national non-profit consumer advocacy organization, has examined rollover accident statistics in the U.S., paying special attention to the issues of SUV safety and SUV rollovers. The group has found that on average, 10,000 people die each year in rollover accidents.
Safety Concerns for SUV Accidents
Public Citizen reports that SUV design flaws often result in dangerous rollover accidents. Some of the Public Citizen assertions about SUV safety include:
- SUVs have a high vehicle profile and a narrow vehicle width – two factors which make them suspectable to rollover accidents
- Many SUVs are constructed with relatively weak roofs, which are subject to caving in, leaving no protection for the occupants
- SUV passengers and drivers are vulnerable to head, neck and spinal cord injuries when involved in SUV rollover accidents
- SUV rollover deaths are responsible for one-third of all highway vehicular deaths
- 60% of SUV occupant deaths happen as a result of SUV rollover accidents
Many of the problems associated with SUV safety can be attributed to the design of the vehicles, which originally were built with the intention to be used as work vehicles. Although many newer model SUVs are designed with safety in mind, not all SUVs were effectively designed as practical passenger vehicles.
