What is Hypoxia?
Hypoxia is a condition in which the brain or another part of the body is deprived of oxygen. Hypoxia occurs when breathing is obstructed or stopped, and when the flow of blood is inadequate in providing oxygen to cells.
Hypoxia from High Altitude or Scooba Diving
Many people experience mild “generalized hypoxia” when they are at a high altitude and atmospheric pressure is low. Alternatively, scuba divers may experience hypoxia as a result of breathing gaseous mixtures with low oxygen content.
Hypoxia During Birth
Hypoxia during birth is a common cause of fetal brain injury.
The effects of hypoxia are more serious for younger patients. Scientists now know that individuals who have experienced birth hypoxia are at a greater risk for mental health problems later in life.
Causes of Hypoxia
Some of the common causes of hypoxia include:
- Choking
- Strangling
- Head trauma
- Carbon Monoxide poisoning
- Cardiac arrest
- Complications from anesthesia
- Complications during birth
- Atmospheric conditions
Symptoms of Hypoxia
Common symptoms of hypoxia include:
- Headaches
- Poor judgment
- Memory loss
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Feelings of euphoria
- Nausea
- Seizures
- Death
The prognosis for someone who has experienced hypoxia depends on how long the brain was deprived of oxygen, and how much brain damage has occurred as a result of this oxygen deprivation.
