Fox News states in a January 2009 story, “At least 340 victims have been sickened on the MSC Sinfonia, now docked in Salvador, Bahia, according to a spokeswoman for the National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance.” The preliminary report found problems with the amount of chlorine in the ship’s drinking water and with the storage of some perishable foods.

Other Cruise Sickness News Stories

In 2006, BBC News reported that a transatlantic cruise ship ended up with more than 550 passengers and 150 crew sick with a highly infectious vomiting virus. The cruise liner ended its voyage early due to the extreme illness. Preliminary tests indicated the cause was the norovirus.

A report in the USA Today, shared that the ocean liner, Regal Princess, was docked because more than 300 people had become sick with a Norwalk-type virus. This virus is highly contagious but lasts only 24 to 48 hours casing nausea and vomiting. A total of 301 passengers and 45 crew members were confirmed with the virus.

In July 2004, 62 people fell ill after eating oysters on a week-long cruise. There were four of these cruises and the 62 people were spread out throughout the different cruises. It was determined that the oysters were to blame for the illnesses which had been in ocean waters that had become too warm for them. They have since been moved to cooler water climates.
