Is the Cruise Ship Making Me Sick? (Part B )

Earlier in 2004, more than 300 people on a Carnival Cruise out of Galveston, Texas got sick with norovirus like symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control was brought in to conduct testing.

The New York Times reported on health inspectors who had to board the cruise ship Carnival Fascination in 2002 to investigate the latest bout of cruise ships sickness. The ship reported 190 passengers and 13 crew members with symptoms of the Norwalk-like virus. Another 500 people reported similar illnesses from the Amsterdam.

The Times Online shares about an outbreak, “Carnival Corporation, the American company that owns The Sea Princess decided to cut short the ship’s seven-night European tour two days ago, after at least 200 passengers were struck down by acute gastroenteritis. The illness comes just days after 70 passengers became sick on The Van Gogh, a cruise ship that was disinfected in Harwich, Essex, last weekend. Norovirus, a stomach bug that usually lasts between 24 to 48 hours was blamed for an illness that affected 600 passengers on board P&O’s Aurora cruise liner in 2003.”

A ship sickness, boating accident, or vehicle crash can change you or your child’s life. If you or someone you know has been injured contact an attorney to learn about your rights and determine liability.

Safest Cruise Ships

The Vessel Sanitation Program, which is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have listed the following cruise ships as scoring 100% on their most recent inspection:

  • Aurora (P&O Cruises)
  • Carnival Glory (Carnival)
  • Diamond Princess (Princess)
  • Emerald Princess (Princess)
  • MSC Lirica (MSC Cruises)
  • MV Explorer (V. Ships Leisure)
  • Norwegian Dawn (Norwegian)
  • Norwegian Dream (Norwegian)
  • Norwegian Pearl (Norwegian)
  • Norwegian Sun (Norwegian)
  • Queen Mary 2 (Cunard)
  • Regatta (Oceania Cruises)
  • Seadream 1 (Sea Dream Yacht Club)

The cleanliness of the cruise ship can have a direct bearing on whether or not you will get sick while on vacation. Before booking your next cruise, it would be wise to check out the most current report from the VSP.

The report shows some of the most common cruise problems as:

  • Potable water systems
  • Whirlpool and swimming pool maintenance
  • Food storage and preparation
  • Pest management
  • Others

From all the reports, illness on cruise lines is not a new concern; rather it is a problem that seems to occur each and every year no matter what has been done to prevent the issue.
