Boating: Making it Safer (Part A)
Boating can be a fun summer time activity. Getting out on the water, enjoying the sun and the company of good friends, is a great summer pastime — that is until an unfortunate accident happens and injuries or even death occur.
There are ways to make boating a safer activity and thus, prevent accidents, injuries, and deaths.
Boating includes the following kinds of vessels:
- Boats
- Jet skis
- Canoes
- Any other water vessel
One of the most important methods to keep the waterways safe is for all boaters to know the law and follow it. There are various ways to find the boating laws in your area:
- Resources
- Library
- Boating websites
- Legal and legislative websites
- Boating clubs
- Watercraft dealers
- Boating courses – courses are offered in many areas for boaters to take to increase their knowledge about boating, the operation of the boat, the law, and safety information.
BUI
Unfortunately, one of the most common reasons for boating injuries or death on the waterway is boating under the influence (BUI) of alcohol or drugs. It is surprising how many people do not realize that it is illegal to do so. Massachusetts has some of the toughest BUI laws on the books. Serious penalties can act as a deterrent and may prevent some boating accidents.
The following actions can take place if you are found to be BUI in Massachusetts:
- Possible imprisonment for up to 30 months
- Fines issued up to $1,000
- Motor vehicle and vessel license can be revoked for up to one year
- Boaters who repeatedly BUI, will have stiffer penalties issued
- If a boater BUI seriously injures someone, they may face 10 years imprisonment, and fines up to $5,000
