Greenstick Fracture: A Painful Child Injury

Children are susceptible to a type of bone break known as a greenstick fracture. A greenstick fracture is different than other types of breaks in that it causes a crack in the bone, but doesn't break all the way. Since children's bones are soft and flexible, they are more prone to these types of fractures than adults.

A greenstick fracture can be caused by a number of things, from a fall on the playground to the actions of a negligent adult. This type of injury also commonly occurs during sports activities.

Symptoms of a Greenstick Fracture

Due to the nature of this fracture, it can be difficult to diagnose. This injury may show signs of pain, swelling and deformity, but these symptoms are not present in every case. It is often hard to differentiate between a greenstick fracture and a sprain or other soft-tissue injury.

If your child is complaining of pain in one of his or her limbs or cannot place weight on it, you should contact your child's pediatrician. The pediatrician may order an x-ray, which should show a greenstick fracture, if present. However, not all greenstick fractures are visible on x-rays because a child's soft bones do not show up as well on these tests. If that happens, the pediatrician may recommend a CT scan or other type of imaging test.

Treatment for a Greenstick Fracture

A greenstick fracture will need to be immobilized in order to heal properly. Casts and removable splints are frequently used to accomplish this task. The pediatrician may want to see another x-ray after seven to 10 days to see if the bone is healing properly. Children's bones heal fairly quickly, so your child's cast or splint may be taken off in only three to four weeks.
