Chicago Bans BPA Plastic Bottles

According to The New York Times, the Chicago City Council passed a ban on bottles containing Bisphenol A (BPA ) plastic, which will take affect in January 2010.

And the previous week Minnesota’s governor signed a statewide ban into law, while the House of Representatives in Connecticut passed a similar ban and the Government of Canada is also taking steps to restrict the use of BPA.

Many food and liquid containers are made with BPA. The chemical is used to harden plastics, keep bacteria from contaminating foods, and prevent cans from rusting.

What the FDA says

The American Chemistry Council has said there is no evidence that the chemical harms children, but consumer and environmental groups have criticized the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for ignoring studies that link BPA with medical conditions such as neurological disorders, and breast and prostate cancer.

The FDA Task Force is reviewing the National Toxicology Program (NTP) Draft Brief by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, as well as the concerns presented in the Canadian draft risk assessment released in April 2008, and are coordinating closely with Health Canada and the Canadian Ministry of the Environment and Minister of Health.

The FDA is also reviewing the emerging literature on BPA, and recently completed a review of the available biological fate data and two recently completed rodent multi-generation reproductive studies. In addition, the FDA is conducting a review of the data on neural and behavioral effects of BPA exposure.

The FDA concluded that FDA-regulated products containing BPA currently on the market are safe and that exposure levels to BPA from food contact materials, including for infants and children, are below those that may cause health effects.

At the present time, until more studies are done, FDA is not recommending that anyone discontinue using products that contain BPA. However, concerned consumers should know that several alternatives to polycarbonate baby bottles exist, including glass baby bottle.
